We had an appointment in Felixstowe at 11.30 this morning so could not do
the Stour today and still having a chest infection I was still not sure I
needed to go windsurfing in the North Sea with a chilly NE blowing. With
low water around 5.30 I was in no hurry but with wall to wall sunshine now
I decided to head down at 2.30 to check out the conditions but got down a
little early really so went for a walk with the camera. The conditions did
not look as good as previous years with the wind in this direction, NE is
probably the best direction for The Dip but her shingle banks have moved
making it pretty big, not smooth like before but a couple of sailors had
now rigged sails around 5m so I decided to give it a try for my first
session here at Felixstowe since 7th October 2022! I went with 5.6 on my
115 lt. and was surprisingly way overpowered for most of the time, I
checked Landguard wind data later and the wind was gusting close to 30
knots at times which is probably why the sea was so big! I am a bit sea
rusty not having been out for ages and rarely sail a fin board these days,
the chest infection did not help either but the sea was not as cold as
feared! Sailing fast was not really an option especially going out as you
were sailing straight into a big swell but coming in was much nicer running
down the waves, gyblng was challenging being way overpowered out to sea and
there was a bumpy short chop close to the beach. A session would not be
complete without some sort of disaster, todays was when I hit a fish,
luckily close to the beach which took me off the front, breaking a harness
line and my dodgy mast extension popped off once again and my board sailed
off without me! That mast extension is now in the bin, it has let me down
for the last time! I could swim ashore with my rigg and Nick Swain swam out
to rescue my board, a big thank you Nick:) Ashore I sorted my harness line
and tried a safety rope from my mast extension to the base and went out for
a few more runs and was surprised to get 28 knots, probably running the
swell on the way in. A few had come down really late but the sun was
dropping and I was getting cold so decided to call it a day, looking
forward to getting out on the sea again on the foil when the wind is a
little lighter, maybe a session on the Stour tomorrow and haven?t been
since October 10th last year!
